An online checkout has a lot of steps. A customer adds a product to the cart, goes to the checkout, fills in forms, and then enters payment details. At each step, they might get distracted or give up.
In a physical shop, it's simpler. The customer chooses an item and pays for it right there. You can bring this to your online store. In-chat payments let customers buy products directly inside the conversation.
How payments in chat work
The customer pays without leaving the chat window on your site, WhatsApp, or Instagram. You do not need to send them to a separate checkout page. This works using payment links.
The process is simple:
- A customer starts a chat. They ask your assistant questions about a product.
- The assistant builds a cart inside the chat. It confirms the items and the price with the customer.
- The assistant generates a secure payment link for that specific cart.
- The customer clicks the link. It opens a secure page from your payment provider, like Stripe or PayPal. The customer enters their payment details there.
- After payment, the customer gets a confirmation in the chat. The order is created in your store's backend, like Shopify or WooCommerce.
The payment is just the end of a helpful conversation.
Why a shorter payment process helps
Fewer steps to pay means more people complete their purchase.
When the checkout process is too long, customers often abandon their carts. They might have to create an account or get distracted. If they can pay immediately in the chat, they are less likely to drop off. This means more conversations turn into sales.
A quick transaction is good customer service. It shows you value the customer's time.
It is also more efficient for you. The system automatically creates the order, updates stock, and records customer information. This is faster than processing orders manually.
For example, a customer asks for a product. The assistant confirms the choice and gives the total. It then sends a secure link to pay. The whole sale can take a couple of minutes.
Security
Shop owners always ask about security. Payments in chat are safe if done correctly. Security depends on your payment gateway, not the chat tool itself.
Your chat platform must never handle or store credit card data. Handling that data requires expensive PCI DSS compliance.
Instead, the chat tool acts as a go-between. When it is time to pay, the system generates a link. This link sends the customer to the secure environment of your payment processor, like Stripe or Adyen. These companies are experts in security.
The chat assistant only connects the customer to the secure payment page. The sensitive part of the transaction happens outside the chat. When you look for a chat tool, make sure it works this way with established, PCI-compliant payment gateways.
What to look for in a payment chat tool
When you choose a tool, check that it has the right features for e-commerce.
E-commerce platform integration
The tool must connect to your store, like Shopify or WooCommerce. This allows the assistant to see your real-time product catalogue, stock levels, and pricing. It also needs this connection to create orders in your back-office.
Payment gateway support
Check if the tool works with the payment gateways you already use. This lets you keep your existing accounts and payment processes.
Cart building
The assistant must be able to build an accurate cart. It needs to handle discount codes and calculate shipping costs. The final payment link has to show the exact amount the customer expects.
Omnichannel capability
Your customers use your website chat, WhatsApp, and Instagram. The tool should let you take payments across all these channels.
Human handoff
Sometimes a person needs to step in. A team member should be able to take over the conversation, see the chat history, and help finalize the sale.
The process is shorter
Offering payments inside a conversation removes steps from the buying process. You make the sale at the exact moment the customer decides to buy.
Tools like Ralfi are built for this. Ralfi connects directly with your store's catalogue and your payment systems. It creates a secure and simple checkout right inside the chat. You can sell to your customers wherever they are.
